Fat Quarter Gang – Gradiance Bed Runner by Quilt Dad

FatQuarterGANG_banner400pxBLUE

Hello, John here from the Quilt Dad blog. We’ve all seen table runners that so beautifully add a touch of quilting and the beauty of our favorite fabrics to enhance our home decor.  But have you ever heard of a bed runner? Why not add a touch of your favorite colors and prints to your bedroom as well? Sometimes we don’t have time to make a full quilt for our beds, but still need a fix of our favorite fabrics.

This strip-pieced project provides a quick way to make a fun embellishment for a made bed.  Consider one for your guest room, kids’ rooms, as a gift for a loved one, or for your own bed!

Finished size: 24” x 94”

Materials needed:

  • 48 – 2.5” x 22” strips of various solids and prints; 4 strips each of 12
different fabrics.  I cut mine from fat quarters of Pure Elements and
Oval Elements.  Consider using a range of tones and colors that
represent a gradation from light to dark.  (Note: I used 5 additional fabrics for my sample bed runner to make it wider. Simply adjust the measurements to make your runner as wide as you’d like!)
  • ½ yard of a sashing fabric.  Cut 7 strips measuring 2.5” x 44” each.  Trim these sashing strips down to 2.5” x 24.5” each.
  • ½ yard of a binding fabric.
  • 2 ½ yards of a backing fabric.

Assembly:

  • Arrange your 12 fabrics in an eye-pleasing order, from top to bottom.  Separate
your 48 fabric strips into 4 identical sets of 12 colors and prints. Make note of your fabric order, to refer to throughout the project.

Beginning with one set, strip piece the strips together along their 22” sides, starting from the top:

  • Sew together the first 6 strips, pressing seams open as you go.
  • When
the first 6 strips are pieced together, take the sewn piece to your
    cutting table.  From this 12.5” x 22” piece, cut 2 – 10.5” x 12.5”
    columns.
  • Sew together the remaining 6 strips, pressing seams open as you go.
  • When
the remaining 6 strips are pieced together, take the sewn piece to your
    cutting table.  From this 12.5” x 22” piece, cut 2 – 10.5” x 12.5”
    columns.
  • Sew together 2 full columns so that each column is 10.5” wide by 12 strips (24.5”) tall.

  • Repeat these steps with your other 3 sets of 12 strips, ensuring you are following the same order of colors and prints.  This will result in a total of 8 identical columns measuring 10.5” wide by 12 strips (24.5”) tall.

  • Sew the bed runner together from left to right, inserting a sashing strip in between the pieced columns.
  • Baste, quilt, and bind your bed runner, and enjoy!
