Let’s go a little wonky with an improv quilt block! Mister Domestic teaches his fun technique

Aloha all makers!

We hope that you are having great Holiday Season. The year ends and we are ready to make summary of all the exciting things we have done in 2016. Stay tuned for the next post! :)

One of the amazing sewing enthusiasts we introduced to the AGF family this year is our AGF sewcialite: Mister Domestic. We couldn't be more happy to have him in our team of AGF fabric lovers. The projects he makes with all of our collections are like art pieces and we are thankful for all the crafty lessons we keep getting from him.

One of the classes we took at "Mister Domestic's sewing school" ;) was how to make an improv flower quilt block. We had so much fun learning how to cut all the wonky strips and sew them together.

We documented it all in thisshort video tutorial. We hope you will have lots of fun watching it. :)

For all of you who want to learn more from Mister Domestic – check out all the classes he gives at Fabric Depot. Also we have a little secret for all the fans of Mister Domestic. He is going to be with us at Quiltcon in Savannah, GA  February 23-26  and will have some sewing demos for you! You can't miss this!

Let us know in comments if you are planning on going to Quiltcon! We would love to see you there!

Happy sewing!

Ola

Awesome Matthew although I think she isn’t convinced with the whole wonky process!

Love this block, Matthew!!! I have a question if I can ask? During the first step, when you’ve got your first wonky color strips cut up, and you start sewing those strips together, what color order should you use? It looks by your finished block, that the paired colors are sometimes reversed, and that some of the strips may not have both colors (for example, only one center color, or only one background color). Or, does it matter? Just trying to figure out how to sew the strips together correctly, so the next step will give me enough variability for the final strip cutting. Such a cool effect!!

What size fabric squares did you start with? Also, from those 6 fabric squares can you make all four blocks?

Haha. It’s very hard for makers who are very precise to let go totally. It’s andxercize in being uninhibited.

If you keep it random then it should even itself out. Just keep the yellows in the center, the blues in the middle and the greens on the outside. There’s honestly no wrong way to do this.

I think they were 6 inch squares but I’m not sure. You won’t be able to make the four blocks from that since you’ll need more of the blues than the other two. I just made 10″ blocks and I used almost a FQ of each blue so a fat eighth should be enough for the 6″ blocks.
