AGF Comforts Texas: A Quilt Drive for the Victims of Hurricane Harvey

Hello everyone,

Over the past few days I’m sure many of you have seen the devastating effects Hurricane Harvey caused to the citizens of Houston. As the days pass and we watch the hurricane induced devastation effect Texas, we feel compelled to take action, like so many of you who are looking for a way to help. While giving what we can monetarily is so important, as makers it can feel like it’s not enough.

Although many will have insurance and FEMA to offer assistance, some losses can’t be replaced. Being located in South Florida, we understand the ongoing struggles that a devastating hurricane can bring. From flood wrenched streets, broken homes, lack of food and electricity along with other variables; anything that can comfort people from these hardships is appreciated. At AGF, we feel the necessity to comfort them the best way we know, with quilts. By providing them with quilts to wrap themselves with, we hope to give them love and something that will make them feel like they’re closer to home.

Quilts-for-texas

This is why we’re starting #AGFcomfortsTexas as an effort to collect regular sized quilts -at least 50" x 65" or larger ( and especially bed size quilts) for the flood victims as a way to bring more comfort & warmth to their lives as they recover.

We’ll be collecting any quilt you would like to donate from September 5th – September 22nd. Due to Hurricane Irma which affected South Florida, submissions have been extended until October 2nd.  We truly appreciate your generosity and anyone who donates a quilt will receive a bundle of 6 fat quarters as a gift from us.

To assure that the quilts are given to those in need, we’ll be working in collaboration with Quilts of Compassion. They are a nonprofit organization who’ve been delivering quilts to victims in disaster areas since 1999. We’re excited to work with them to help as many people as possible!

Please send your quilt donations to:

Please print and attach this label to your quilt (download label) so that we can keep track of who it came from.

We hope you’re able to take part in this effort to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. If you have any questions please send an email to stephanie@artgalleryfabrics.com.

All the best,

Stephanie

It looks like Florida will be in the path of a severe storm shortly. Will trying to receive quilts to your location be effected by Hurricane Irma if it makes landfall as they are predicting this weekend?

Hi Mary! If hurricane Irma hits us most likely the post office will close and they’ll hold our packages until the weather gets better. To be safe, I recommend sending your quilt after the hurricane has passed. We’ll probably extend the submission period due to the unpredictable storm coming our way.

Do you just want regular size or will you take any size. I have several baby quilts. Thanks for what you are doing.

Is the download intended to be a temporary paper label, or a cloth label that is stitched on?

Any update since Irma has now plowed through Florida?
Also, I live in central Texas, and mailing a quilt to Florida, for it to be returned to Texas seems a bit crazy. Have you heard of any Texas organizations/groups collecting quilts? Thank you, and hoping you are dry!

Hi Ruth! I can see how your concern about sending your quilt to us. I suggest contacting local quilt guilds to see if any of them are taking quilt donations for the victims in Houston.

    Hi Stephanie,
I have a quilt made for me by a friend for my birthday. It has never been used but it has a label on the back. I believe it can be taken off but I’m not sure what that would look like. I am new at quilting and have not sewn any larger quilts yet but I really want to participate. Thanks
