SEWING A QUILT WITH RAYON – How to Sew with Rayon Fabrics | DIY Home Decor

Rayon-Striped

Hey Makers,

We love our traditional, warm snuggly quilts but here in Florida, we are always looking for a way to make an ultra lightweight, soft,  luxurious quilt to take with us to the beach or to accessories our homes. With the introduction of our Rayon Striped collection, we knew we had to put it to the test by making our ultimate dream quilt we have been dreaming about for so long.

With a mix of our solid rayons and stripes, we put together the “Strippy” free quilt pattern.

For those of you who may be fearful of dippin’ your toes into the rayon quilt making process we put together a video for you to aid you in your journey as well as a printable a PDF to follow.

Feel free to think outside the box and use fabrics other than traditional quilting cotton, we found that the outcome is absolutely gorgeous.

Let us know in the comments if you have sewn with Rayon before and if you have any tips or tricks to share! If you haven't checked it out make sure to flip through the pages of our NEW RAYON STRIPED Lookbook for more inspiring things to make with Rayon!

Happy Sewing,

I would love to make a quilt with rayon fabric but have several questions. Is the quilt top finished like a tradition quilt using batting and a backing? Can it be longarmed?

Hi Diana, so happy you are interested in sewing with Rayon. We didn’t add batting to ours because we wanted it to be lightweight for the hot Florida summer months. We just added our pure solid quilting cotton called white linen for the backing and hand stitched our quilt top and backing together. If you wanted you could totally add batting for warmth. I don’t see why it couldn’t be long armed but I would check with the place you get your quilts long armed just in case. :)

Can you mix cotton and rayon fabrics when making a quilt? Should you wash all fabrics before sewing the pieces together? I am afraid if you wash the quilt when it gets dirty, the two fabrics may look different when dry. Thank you. Pat Burns

I saw a video on YouTube where someone used rayon fabric as a quilt back since it is so soft. Do I need to do anything special for the seams if using on the back?
