Newest Addition to AGF Marketing Team

Greetings, AGF friends –

Pleasure to meet you all and excited to begin contributing to this very inspiring blog!

My name’s Sophia and I’m a new addition to the multi-talented, AGF Marketing Team. With a background in Marketing, Branding and Fashion Merchandising, I’ve worked in various creative environments from retail, fashion magazines, commercials, film and a design studio. More than anything, I really love collaborating with fellow passionate individuals to bring innovative ideas to life. When I'm not working, I'm often found spending time with my darling husband and two beagle puppies, dancing to disco music, swooning over the latest Gucci fashion show or cooking something spicy!

Since sewing is definitely a main focus here at AGF, I’m super eager to start using a thread and needle again to create! There's something so satisfying when you're rolling up your sleeves and creating with your own two hands. It creates such an irreplaceable, special connection with the piece of work. Textiles have always been a huge inspiration to me, and my mind immediately translates them into countless possibilities of handmade garments and accessories. However, I’d like to “push the needle further” and start envisioning quilts! Thanks to Meli's guidance, I will eventually be creating my first quilt block along with some of the other girls here at AGF. Can't wait!

Do you remember what it was like making your first quilt block? Any tips to remember before or during the process? Feel free to post your advice in the comments, below. I’m all ears!

Looking forward to many fun projects ahead while learning with every single one of you!

Keep creating,

-Sophia

Hi Sophia and welcome to the AGF family! My best advice to give anyone just starting their first quilt block is to make sure you are sewing with a true 1/4″ seam allowance and to cut your pieces accurately. It all goes so much smoother after that! oxoxo

Hi Sophia. I’m looking forward to seeing your creations. I find it helpful before cutting to spray-starch my fabric. I find it makes for ore accurate cutting. Also, I sew with a scant quarter-inch, especially when sewing a block with many pieces. Most of all – Have Fun!

Both of the other comments have good points, but most of all take you time and enjoy the moment. It’s the journey not the destination that make it so much fun.

The number one mistake I made at the beginning was being too rough handling my block pieces. I’d iron rather than press. I’d suggest using plenty of starch and iron your fabric well, both sides, before you cut the block pieces out. And an accurate quarter inch seam is a must!

Hi Sharon! Thanks so much for the warm welcome and advice! I will check and re-check the measurements for the block, ensuring it’s at a 1/4″ seam allowance. Appreciate the insight! :)

How exciting! I can’t wait to see what you create. My
Only advice would be to take notes every step of the way, so when you write the pattern for your block, you remember everything. You probably already knew that. 😉 I’ll keep my eyes peeled for your work!

Hi Elizabeth! Thanks so much. What a great point regarding the documentation process with a pattern. It’s always helpful and so important to create a personal library of references! Talk soon and appreciate the words of wisdom.

Hi Sophia, Welcome to AGF! Your first quilt block…easy peasy…just watch any of the AGF Quilt blocks of the month. I save my fabric selvages to and incorporate those into my quilt label (to document the collection, dates, name and to whom or what the quilt is for).
Latch onto Pat Bravo of course for lots of karma.
