My Photo Stash – Magnificent Sunset

Hello my fellow makers!

It's been a while since I've written here, and I've missed sharing and chatting with you about all things fabric. This time I'm back to share a new source of inspiration that I've found for my personal projects and that's keeping me joyfully busy these days. I will call it "My Photo Stash." It all started with a photograph I took on a day in which the forecast said it would be nothing but grey skies and pouring rain. I took advantage of the fact that the sky was clear (contrary to what the forecast predicted) to hop on a bike and ride around for a bit… And then the sunset did this:

AGF_sunset_myphotostash
It is not the best quality photograph, but I love that it reminds me of how nature constantly amazes us. The combination of colours is so striking that it gave me the idea of taking a moment we captured on camera and translating it into fabric choices for the making of an heirloom. Wouldn't it be beautiful to gift someone a photo of a shared moment, and something made inspired by it? Even a bundle of the fabrics next to the photo. I would love receiving that.

For my interpretation I chose seven colours from our Pure Elements line (from top to bottom): Ocean Waves, Tranquil Waters, Very Berry, Apricot Crepe, Empire Yellow, Purple Pansy & Purple Wine.

Pure_elements_myphotostash

I would love to know if you've used photos as inspiration for quilts or projects (maybe garments, too?). I am looking forward to seeing your own "Photo Stashes" and please stay tuned to see the project I will be making with these fabrics. If you love this "Magnificent Sunset" combination let me know in the comments and I might do a giveaway of this fabric selection.

Rock n' sew!

I love that your selection has all color, no white, cream or greys. I have been trying to work with more color saturation w/o those elements.

This is one of the prettiest fabric selections I have seen online! It caught my eye even before I read the post! The colors are saturated but still soft. Beautiful! Would make a great giveaway 😉! Love your blog by the way!

Thank you, Lynda! I agree, it’s easy to go on that route and choose a neutral colour as the base to create a striking contrast. This time nature was the guide and I think all these colours have a nice balance with each other. So go for it full colour and please share the fabrics you pick :)

Thank you, Diane! AGF has recently added new colours to the Pure Elements collection, and I was lucky that two of those matched a shade in the sky perfectly. Share your stash! I’d love to see it <3

Great post, Lauv! What a fantastic idea of giftng both the photo inspiration and either a sewn gift of a selection of matching fabrics! I know many who would appreciate these gifts, and i know i would too! These colors!!! OMGOSH THESE COLORS!! I am glad you named the colors so i can try to add these to my stash ASAP! I need to add some solids to all my AGF prints! I have actually had these very colors on my mind for a sewing project…maybe pillows? Now i can easily find the right fabrics, thanks to your post and AGF!! I LOVE that coral pink color at the base of the fabrics photo (its my favorite!) Is that also an AGF fabric? Maybe its also Very Berry? Or a different fabric color? Just curious! Thanks for this post and the AWESOME inspiration!! I also wanted to tell you I appreciate all of the awesome AGF blog posts, and other social media and inspiration that AGF shares!! You guys are my favorite and i look forward to every post!!

I once participated in an online challenge where we were to use a photo as inspiration for a quilt. I used a photo of a decorative lightpost taken on a trip to Ireland. I made a little quilt that now hangs in my sewing room and reminds me of the trip. And this post reminded me that I ought to use photos as inspiration more often!

Thank you, Julie! I’m glad you like the idea of the gift, I think many people would really appreciate something like that. The coral-pink colour at the base is actually a table where I set the fabrics to photograph them BUT, we also have a Pure Element that matches it; it’s called Cherry Lipgloss, now if you want something that is still pink but leans more toward coral, Flamingo is a really lovely colour. We are so grateful that you enjoy the posts, we have many things coming up so please stay tuned!

I love the idea of quilt inspiration from a photo! I want to make a quilt for my MIL and am not really sure which pattern is just right for her. She travels extensively so I’m thinking taking inspiration from travel photos might just be prefect – thanks for the inspiration! That bundle is gorgeous!
