My Photo Stash – Mini Quilt (Magnificent Sunset)

Hello everyone!

I am really excited to be back, I am typing exactly as I'm speaking because I cannot control the excitement.

Last time I wrote here, I shared with you my new source of inspiration. If you want to read that story again, or if you haven't read it please CLICK HERE.

I took all those beautiful fabrics in bright colours and I started playing around to create a mini quilt for the wall.

Here are the fabrics because: VIBRANT!

Pure_elements_my_photo_stash

I confess I did a bit of pre-design on the computer, but actually when I started placing things in real life I liked it even more. Here is a photo I took with my phone while I was placing pieces around:

Wip_my_photo_stash

Quilting police: please don't come after me, I am just a girl standing in front of some beautiful fabric with extreme happiness to create the things I see in my mind. Having said that here is a close up of my baby:

My_photo_stash_close_up
I decided to knot it instead of quilting it because I was sewing at home and Lolita Jazz, my sister's cat (also my goddaughter), lives by the machine. This way I could do it in my room. I also love knotted quilts, they have this nostalgia and calm-process feeling. I would be happy making knots all day, drinking tea by the fire because I like corny. I'm looking for corny in my life (this is a reference to the movie The Holiday).

Here is the final project:

I wouldn't normally gravitate toward these colours. I stick to primary red, jet black and crisp white, but I had to do it. That photo (also framed on the table) and its tones inspired me SO MUCH.

Because of that, I am doing a giveaway of the Pure Elements I used here, hoping it will also inspire many of you to create.

To enter, please leave a comment below telling me about a photo that moves you and the kind of project it will inspire you to make. I will choose my favourite before the year ends and then contact the winner so that she/he will get new fabric for the NEW YEAR!

I wish all of you the happiest times during the holidays, may you share many laughs and enjoy time together with your loved ones. We don't need as many gifts as we are made to believe, but we do need present moments (without phones). If we are going to have gifts may they be intentional and made with love.

As always: ROCK N' SEW!

Lauv

This is really beautiful! I have a picture I wish I could share with you of a pool of water on a mountain, which is this perfect aqua blue surrounded by grey and white stone and there’s a few unusual splashes of colour – a bright yellow gold and a sunrise in the background – and it’s so stunning but I’ve never quite figured out how to translate the colour scheme into fabric.

I tend to gravitate to modern art as well as art deco designs – I think I would go that route – maybe even a stained glass effect?

Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm for creating! Love those bright colours. I am also inspired by photos of sunrises and sunsets, loving the intensity of the colours. it’s always a gift if I am looking out the window just as all the glorious colour of a sunrise or sunset glimmers.

Love your colors and quilt! I need more mini quilts in my life. With that being said, I’m going to look through my photos of trips to Italy and France. I know there are some I can use as inspiration for color and design.

I have a fallen leaves photo with some unusual colors. I haven’t made anything based on it, but it’s a reminder to look closely at things.

My husband took a beautiful sunset photo at the Grand Canyon many years (and anniversaries) ago. Now that I am retired, I finally am able to spend quality time with my sewing machine. Art Gallery fabrics are beautiful and a dream to quilt with. Your quilt pulls your space together— it looks great! Thanks for further inspiration!

i had a lot of blocks made of batiks in shades of blue, lilac, yellow, and orange; a friend posted a pic on fb of a central texas sunset and i realized my blocks were the same colors as that sunset. i put the blocks together with darks at the top and the lighter ones in the middle and bottom. i named my quilt “central texas sunset.

Ooops I forgot to add. I have a photo of my parents together shortly after WW2, when they met at a WMCA Christian group. They look like movie stars.
I would love to make a beautiful quilt that reminds me of the clothing they are wearing, and the colors that would be around them (the photo is black and white) Quite attractive those two were

I don’t want to be Debbie Downer, but the photos that have moved me lately are of the devastation in the Panhandle of Florida. I haven’t lived here long, but I joined a group of wonderful ladies determined to make quilts for the people who have lost their homes and belongings in the Panhandle area…I’ve never experienced a hurricane like Hurricane Michael and I have felt compelled to help this group (Quilt Blessings for the Panhandle) on Facebook. If I were to win this fabric, it would go straight to the group to make more quilts for their planned deliveries in January and February. They delivered over 700 quilts last Saturday! Thanks for the giveaway!

Thank you, Laura! It really makes me happy to hear how you’re aware of the GIFT that it is to see these sunrises and sunsets. I love them. I had never used them as inspiration for colour. It’s one of those things that I love to see but that doesn’t particularly resonate with my personal style. I’m glad I did it, and hopefully it will inspire you in your own creations.

My husband and I live in our RV. We are currently in Mesa, AZ for three months. We love the deserts. The sunsets are unreal. I also love the play of the earth and the cacti. The photo montage grows each day as I try to capture the majesty of it all. The RV place we are staying at for 3 months has a very active quilting group and they have created a challenge to create a block based on your initials. Mine are MJ. So I created Mesa Jewel. It is an improve curved background in tones of the earth here with a paddle cactus in sage/lavender. It’s gone from “let’s make a block” to “that has to become a whole quilt”. I love your mini. I am drawn to bright to colors and it perfectly captures your inspiration photo. Thank you for sharing and inspiring me!
