Patchwork Kitchen Towel Trio

As a Mom I spend a giant portion of my day in the kitchen whether I like it or not. Dishes, cooking, the endless snacks my 4 year old asks for, our kitchens as Moms ends up being a place we spend a lot of time. Which is how I got inspired to make the Patchwork Kitchen Towel Trio!

Three Kitchen towels constructed in different ways to inspire you to bring your patchwork and add your favorite fabric prints to your kitchen. I knew I had to use Katie O’Shea’s newest collection ‘Stillwater’ because of its relaxing zen vibes and the greens and blues in this collection are the perfect shades to display all year round.

I paired her collection with 3 different colors from AGF’s linen blend collection. I have always been a fan of AGF linen so I was super excited to play around with some of the newer colors!  AGF Linen is a perfect substrate to add to your kitchen with its beautiful and functional texture and durability.

Take a look at the materials and fabrics used  below and lets get started!

To create your mitered corners watch this step by step tutorial below!

Construction for Towel 1:

Sew the following pieces together: Sew a 3 1/2” Fabric C square to a 3 1/2” x 2 1/2” rectangle from Fabric G,E,F,D,and B, and to the end sew a 3 1/2” Fabric A square.  Next sew your remaining set of pieces together making the mirror image.

Sew a 3 1/2” Fabric A square to a 3 1/2” x 2 1/2” rectangle from Fabric B,D,F,E,and G and to the end sew a 3 1/2” Fabric C square.

Use two sided fusible tape on the top and bottom of your 3 1/2” x 16 1/2” strips from Fabric H to attach your strip sets to cover your seams. Sew your strip sets to the top and bottom of a 16 1/2” square from Fabric H, wrong sides together.

We are going to be using a french seam to incase our seams. Press seams and incase raw edges. Topstitch as close to the edge as possible.

Repeat this same process to attach your remaining 6” x 16 1/2” strips from Fabric H to the top and bottom of your towel encasing the raw edges and topstitching.

To finish off the raw edges of my towel I used this mitered corners video to give them a professional finished look.

Construction for Towel 2:

Take all your 2” squares from Fabric A and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner with a fabric marking pen and straight edge on the wrong side of the fabric.

Place them on each cover of your 3 1/2” fussy cut squares, right sides together and sew on the line you drew. Trim your seam allowance to 1/4” and press open to reveal your square in a square block. Repeat this process to get 8 of these blocks.

Sew a row of four blocks together and sew a 2 1/2” x 3 1/2” rectangle to each side. Make two of these rows.

Take your four (4) 2” x 16 1/2” strips and fold in half and press

Sew strips to the top and bottom of your patchwork strip sets at 1/4” . Place fusible tape on the back side of the strips and measure 5 1/2” up from the bottom and top of your 16 1/2” x 32 1/2” rectangle from Fabric D. Attach patchwork and press into place. Topstitch down trim as close to the edge on each side as possible.

Finish off the towel using mitered corners.

Construction for Towel 3:

To attach your 6” x 16 1/2” rectangles from Fabric A to your 16 1/2” square from Fabric C we are going to use that same french seam method as our first towel to incase the raw edges.

The bottom edge of our 6” x 16” rectangle from Fabric A we are going to sew wrong sides together to our 4 1/2” x 16 1/2” strips from fabric C. Fold your 2 1/2” strips from Fabric B like we did in towel 2 and sew to your raw edges and topstitch strip down to towel sewing as close as possible. Finish off the towel with mitered corners.

Which towel was your favorite? It is so hard to pick a favorite because I like different things about each one. I can’t wait to try making more with other AGF collections to make a set for every holiday and also make more for non holiday times in different color palettes. Switching up your linens is such a small thing but sparks so much joy and adds that special touch that truly makes your living space a home!

Sure beats buying them from the store when you are able to hand craft them yourself. You have more control over the size and proportions of the towel and fabric used.  Using binding, french seam, topstitching with mitered corners adds the perfect detail and professional touch! Play around with different patchwork and size of binding and trims of fabric. Your guests will for sure be asking where they can get some!

Happy Sewing,

Melissa
